Ribe - A leap back in time

Ribe is a charming town on Jutland in the south west of Denmark, close to the Wadden Sea. Dating back to the 8th century, the age of Vikings, it is the oldest town in Denmark.



Fregatten Jylland

Fregatten Jylland is the longest wooden warship in the World. The boat is surrounded by a museum hall and Fregat Cafe, a ship building yard and a harbour for wooden ships. It is even possible to stay over at Fyrskib XXI or in a hammock at the frigate.


Århus is Denmark’s second largest city and has great atmosphere and vibrancy. Also dubbed the “Canon of Danish art & culture”, it has been at the forefront of defining Danish art and culture. Århus is also internationally known as a city of living music. Some of the biggest names on the Danish music scene started there and it is still the "kindergarten" for a rich musical environment in Denmark. There is plenty for a visitor to see and do in Arhus.


Ribe Cathedral

Ribe Cathedral (Ribe Domkirke) (Jutland + sights & attractions + arts&culture) Although this cathedral had two towers when it was first built in the 12th century, one of the towers collapsed on the night of Christmas in 1283, killing several people. The current tower was reconstructed in 1333.

Aalborg is the fourth-largest city in Denmark - after Copenhagen, Aarhus and Odense. The earliest settlements date back to around 700 AD. Its location by the Limfjord made it an important harbour during the Middle Ages and an industrial centre later. Today the city is in a transition from a working-class, industrial city to a knowledge-based one. One of the driving forces in the transition is the University of Aalborg, founded in 1974.



Kolding is a Danish seaport located at the head of Kolding Fjord in Jutland. It is a transportation, commercial, and manufacturing centre. Kolding is well known for its dramatic history, its beautiful countryside, its rich and varied cultural life as well as its thriving business sector. Visit the Kolding Castle, which gives a panoramic view of the city overlooking the Kolding Fjord. The Trapholt museum is also worth a visit!


Lindholm Hoeje Viking cemetery (Lindholm Hoje)

North of Nørresundby lies Lindholm Høje, with nearly 700 graves dating from the Iron Age and the Viking era. Most of the graves which have been excavated contained ashes; the dead were burned, together with their burial objects, and then interred in a grave marked with a stone. The old gravestones are triangular, the later ones round or oval. Upright stones in the form of ships date from the Viking period. This is one of the largest Viking graveyards in Northern Europe.

Den Gamle By

Munkebjerg Hotel

The Munkebjerg Hotel is located outside Veile in Jutland. It looks over fjords and rooms with balconies are available. Herning Museum (Herning Kunstmuseum)

Established in 1977, Herning Kunstmuseum grew out of the active industrial life in and around Herning in the 1950s. Today, the museum''s collections consist primarily of a selection of the former Aage Damgaard collection, as well as the art collection belonging to the Municipality of Herning. A direct shuttle bus takes you to the museum from Birk Centerpark station.

 Herning is located on the central region of Jutland and is home to Messecenter Herning, the largest exhibition centre in Scandinavia, which gives the town a reputation for its many trade fairs. The town is also home to sculptor Ingvar Cronhammar's unique monumental work "Elia". It is a black-painted, 60 m dome with four 10 m wide stairways inset into its surface at the earth's cardinal points.



Ebeltoft is one of the tourist centres of Denmark, due to the natural beauty of the area, its old town centre with cobble stoned streets and half timbered houses centuries old and, not least, a large amount of beaches. Ebeltoft is also home to one of the world's first glass museums and the Fregatten Jylland, the longest wooden warship in the World.

Legoland is a “must see” attraction if you go to Denmark! The theme park, which is located in Billund city in the southern part of Jutland, bustles with families and Lego fans. Approximately 44.5 million blocks are used to recreate miniature versions of cities from all around the world. Legoland also has several restaurants and quality accommodation facilities, such as Hotel Legoland.

Maersk Air flies between Copenhagen and Billund daily and takes 35 minutes. You can also take the train from Copenhagen to Vejle and then take a bus to Legoland, which takes around 2h.



Randers is a small town located in the harbour of the Kolding fjord in Jutland. Here you can enjoy activities such as hiking, bird watching and cycling through a lush forest. It takes approximately 30 minutes from Århus by car.


Skagen Museum

Skagens Museum is the Skagen artists’ museum. The Skagen artists all had in common that they were inspired by naturalism and open-air painting, sought new places and motifs, and during the course of the 1880s Skagen was transformed into an artists’ colony with room for both work and play. The Old City Hall (Det Gamle Radhus)

The old city hall in Ebeltoft occupies an area of only 77m sq. It was constructed in 1789 and used as a city hall until 1840. Today, it is used as a museum, displaying Thai's King Sham and retro fire fighting equipment.

Hotel Randers is located in the centre of Randers city close to the Railway station. The Hotel was built in 1856 and is one of the oldest Hotels in the Jutland province. It has a very beautiful interior and is well worth a stay.

Trapholt Museum (Trapholtmuseet)

Trapholt is one of the largest and most popular design and arts museums in Denmark outside of Copenhagen. Opened in 1988, Trapholt is situated in beautiful natural surroundings, with a view out over Kolding Fjord. The Trapholt Museum exhibits works of modern Denmark. A furniture gallery was also established in 1996 and displays a variety of Danish furniture made after the 20th century.

Japanese Garden (Den Japanske Have)

This is an amazingly beautiful and sophisticated Japanese garden. It includes several sub-gardens, a Japanese house, a tea house (chashitsu), a shop, and a café. The garden is particularly beautiful during summer and autumn.

Hirtshals is located on the North Sea, and is especially known for its fishing and ferry harbours. It is the home of the North Sea Museum, one of Denmark's largest tourist attractions. The museum has one of the largest aquariums in Europe. It was built in 1984 and was expanded in 1998 with an oceanarium, an aquarium with 4,5 million litre water. A ferry to Norway is also in operation.



Billund city is home to Denmark’s theme park Legoland. In the heart of the Danish peninsula Jutland, Legoland can be reached easily by car. If you are flying in, Billund's airport is within walking distance of the park. Billund is great fun for all ages and offers many things other parks don't. 340 billion pieces of lego and many rides can provide entertainment for days!



Skagen is a very picturesque town located in the northernmost point of Jutland. The beautiful landscape itself, created by yellow and orange-based houses with white windows and doors, soft sunrays, and the waters of two channels weaving together is like a painting, and has mesmerized many artists over the years. Recently, many tourists from neighbouring countries have begun to visit this town. You can see the great number of artworks, which stand on their own as a history of the town, at the Skagen Museum. A collection of the works produced between 1880 and 1930 by artists known as "Skagen artists," such as Hr.og Fru Ancher, Peder Severin Krøyer, and Christian Krohg. 

It takes around 1h from Aalborg and 40 minute from Frederikshavn by train.


Moesgard Prehistory Museum

The Moesgard Prehistory Museum contains archaeological collections from Denmark and from excavations carried out in Bahrain and other places in the Persian Gulf region. It is a museum of local history and a speciality museum in the areas of archaeology and ethnography. The 2000 year old carbonized body, Grauballemand, which is preserved in a glass case, is a must-see.

Kolding Castle (Koldinghus)

The Kolding Castle was constructed as a fortress as well as a castle in the 13th century when Kolding, was the southern border of Denmark. From the Kolding Castle you can overlook the city and the Kolding Fjord.

Esberg, located on the Jutland island, was once Denmark's biggest fishing harbour, and the harbour is still an economic driving force in the town. Besides the fishing industry Esbjerg is also the main city for Denmark's oil and offshore activities. The city has a great maritime museum.


North Jylland Museum (Nordjyllands Kunstmuseum)

This museum was designed by the Finish architect Alvar Aalto and exhibits a fine collection of modern art

Glass Museum (Glasmuseun)

Ebeltoft is one of the greatest glass-making cities in Northern Europe. Not only does the Glass museum showcase local designs, it also exhibits the works of up-and-coming artists from around the world. Here, you can also watch the glass-blowing process.


Mando is located outside Ribe in Jutland. If you wish to experience pristine nature this is the place to go. Many tourists go here to enjoy bird watching. Bicycles can also be rented on the island in order to get around and explore different areas of the island. Although there is a regular bus service to the island during the summer season, the road is swampland and disappears under water at high tide.


Jelling is approximately 11km from Vejle in Jutland. There are two gravestones in Jelling that were built by the founder of Denmark's royal family during the Viking era, King Gorm, and his son, Harold Bluetooth. They are engraved with words that praise both kings. The gravestones are registered as heritage sites.

Access: IC bound to Struer or Herning from Copenhagen, transfer at Fredericia and get off at Jelling. It takes approximately 3 hours.

Old Dye Factory

The dye factory is located in a farmhouse and operated here until the second half of the 18th century. Tools, documents, houses, and other items from the past are recreated within the 20 rooms of the factory. There is also a demonstration corner in the courtyard where you can get hands-on experience.

Århus Gallery

Arhus Konst Museum launched in April of 2004 and is designed by architects Schmidt, Hammer and Lassen, who also designed the royal library (Black Diamond) in Copenhagen. The architecture is an experience in itself, but the museum also possesses one of the finest international art collections from the 1700 hundreds until today. It also has an information centre, library, art shop, café and restaurant worth visiting.
